U.P. High Schoolers Showcase their Skills at Annual Career and Technical Education Competition
On April 24, high school construction and welding students from across the Upper Peninsula competed in the annual U.P. Construction/Welding Skills Challenge. This event was first held in 2007. Seven U.P. school districts participated in this exciting event, where students had a chance to showcase their talents and dedication.
Teams of five construction students faced off in a woodshed building competition. As part of this competition competitors were judged on established construction criteria, safety, teamwork and an electrical component. In addition, teams earned points by operating an excavator and or a crane under the guidance of Operating Engineers Local 324.
Welding competitors had the opportunity to exhibit their skills using either SMAW (stick), GMAW (wire feed) welding. The top welding students from each school demonstrated their expertise by creating an air-tight cube (Vessel) using three welding processes, showcasing their advanced skills.
The UPCC received support from trade unions, contractors, and industry partners. Members were on hand to help judge, educate, and ensure students' safety.
“This is a great day to showcase everything that we have to offer here in the Upper Peninsula,” said UPCC Executive Director Mike Smith.
UPCC hopes events like this inspire students who graduate from their CTE high school programs to pursue full-time employment in the U.P., where the trades are in high demand.
